Garage Door Opener Not Working? Here’s How to Troubleshoot It
Few things are more frustrating than pressing your garage door remote and getting nothing. Before calling a technician, run through these quick troubleshooting steps — many opener issues can be resolved in minutes without a service call.
Step 1: Check the Power Source

This sounds obvious, but it’s the most common culprit. Make sure the opener is plugged in and that the outlet has power. Check your circuit breaker panel for a tripped breaker. If your opener has a surge protector, verify it hasn’t tripped.
Step 2: Replace the Remote Batteries
Remote batteries last 1–2 years with regular use. If your remote is working inconsistently or you have to stand very close to the opener to make it work, the batteries are probably weak. Try a fresh set of AA or AAA batteries (check your remote’s battery compartment).
Step 3: Check the Safety Sensors
All garage doors manufactured after 1993 are required to have photoelectric safety sensors near the floor on each side of the door. If these sensors are misaligned, dirty, or blocked, the door won’t close. Look for a solid green light on one sensor and an amber light on the other. If either is blinking, realign the sensors until both glow steady.
Step 4: Inspect the Tracks and Springs
If the motor runs but the door doesn’t move, the problem might be mechanical rather than electrical. Check the tracks for obstructions, and look at the springs above the door. A broken torsion spring will prevent the door from moving regardless of how powerful the opener is.
Step 5: Reset the Opener
Many opener brands have a reset button (often labeled “Learn” or “Home”) on the motor unit. Holding it for 6–10 seconds resets the unit and clears all programmed remotes. After resetting, you’ll need to reprogram your remotes and keypads.
When to Call a Professional
If you’ve worked through all these steps and your opener still isn’t working, it’s time for a professional diagnosis. Common issues that require a technician include burnt-out motor capacitors, stripped gears in the drive system, damaged wiring, or a faulty logic board. At Kiki Garage Door, our technicians carry replacement parts for all major opener brands — LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, and more.
